Planet – Demonstrating Environmental Stewardship

"If companies don’t start considering the environment now, they won’t be around later to catch up."
Louis Yu, Executive VP of Global Quality

Top environmental concerns facing the planet today are global climate change, water scarcity and declining ecosystem services. Looking specifically at these concerns, Perrigo has programs in place at all of our sites around the globe to understand our impact and how we can improve.

Demonstrating environmental stewardship

We adhere to good manufacturing practices while keeping a close eye on our environmental impact. We have programs in place to monitor and conserve energy use, reduce waste from operations and offices, increase our recycling efforts and monitor water consumption.

How Perrigo is accepting its responsibility to promote a healthy planet:

Perrigo has programs in place at all locations to understand our impact on energy use, water consumption, and declining ecosystem services through closely monitoring our ecological footprint. We also initiated a global program to collect data related to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We are incorporating this data in our Corporate Social Responsibility Report and on-going improvement efforts.

Continuously improving packaging sustainability

Perrigo considers environmental impact when designing and selecting materials for our packaging. More and more, companies are being asked by customers and consumers to distribute products in more ecofriendly packaging.

Many of our customers have robust sustainability programs and Perrigo is committed to supporting their efforts by continuously seeking ways in which we can minimize the creation of packaging waste material – during its manufacture, distribution and at the end of its useful life.

Perrigo continuously improves the sustainability of our packaging by:

  • Regularly evaluating display packaging to reduce the number of tons of corrugate used and transported
  • Re-assessing carton-less options for select product and sizes
  • Offering larger case pack options without inner packs for select products and sizes to reduce corrugated waste and bundling film use
  • Including packaging sustainability considerations in all new product development projects and package change requests
  • Using containerboard packaging that is derived from 100% postconsumer recycled content.
  • Sourcing OTC cartons that are certified through the Sustainable Forestry Initiative or equivalent certification standards.

Perrigo remains committed to delivering sustainable packaging while reducing related waste. See the difference a slightly smaller carton can make in the omeprazole example.
